MessagePack is an efficient binary serialization format. It lets you exchange data among multiple languages like JSON. But it's faster and smaller. Small integers are encoded into a single byte, and typical short strings require only one extra byte in addition to the strings themselves.

Hmm, looking into it, it appears there's node support, but limited client-side support. The only library that seemed somewhat up to date was [msgpack-js](https://github.com/creationix/msgpack-js). Any experience with it @RobertTheGrey?

No haven't had any experience with it yet - just saw it today and it looked interesting so I posted it - would like to check it out soon, see what happens :)

There is node support, in fairness it took me a while to find it, it's the second last on the right on the list of bindings, written by the venerable Matteo Collina.
