CSS Custom Properties (aka CSS Variables) Don't Make CSS Preprocessors Obsolete

Ben Nadel expresses his confusion over recent predictions that CSS custom properties (aka, CSS "variables") will make CSS preprocessors, like LESS CSS and Sass, obsolete. There's nothing that he can see in his typical web-component CSS that seems to be made redundant by CSS custom properties.
